Eclipse Magick:
Many magicians choose to do their most powerful spells during a special astronomical event known as an "eclipse." Just as the sign of the Moon affects the power of rituals and worldly events, there is an additional twist when the Lunar eclipse happens in a particular sign. [Note: This information will be added soon. Check back for info.]

Solar Eclipses:
A total eclipse of the Sun is a special geocentric astronomical event that occurs when the Moon passes exactly in front of the Sun, preventing the sun’s light from reaching the earth. During the time of the eclipse’s totality, those people located within the path of the Moon's dark shadow can witness the wondrous shimmering solar corona as it fills the sky.

Causes of a Solar Eclipse:
An eclipse of the Sun occurs when the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth, casting a shadow on the Earth's surface – this is a phenomena which is only possible during the lunar phase of the New Moon.

Although, a New Moon phase occurs once a month, there are a couple of reasons as to why we don’t witness a Solar Eclipse every month. The first reason is that the apparent sizes of the Sun and Moon are very similar as seen from the Earth. The result of this is that the Moon's shadow is only a few tens to hundreds of kilometers wide. This limits the region of the Earth that experiences an eclipse. Secondly, the Moon's orbit is slightly tilted with respect to the Earth's orbit. This means that the Sun, Moon and Earth rarely line up exactly during the phase of the New Moon, so an eclipse doesn't happen every month.

Causes of a Lunar Eclipses:
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth's shadow falls on the moon. Lunar eclipses occur, on average, about every 6 months.

Types of Lunar Eclipses:
Total Eclipse - When the entire moon enters the Earth's umbra (the darkest part of its shadow,) this is called a total eclipse.

Partial Eclipse - When only part of the moon enters the Earth's umbra, this is called a partial eclipse.

Duration of Lunar Eclipses:
During an average total lunar eclipse, the moon is within the Earth's umbra for about an hour. This is called totality.

Frequency of Lunar Eclipses:
Since the plane of the moon's orbit is inclined about 5°: from the plane of the Earth's orbit, lunar eclipses are relatively infrequent. There are about two lunar eclipses each year (visible somewhere on Earth.)
