Every 2-1/2 days, the Moon moves through one of the twelve signs of the Zodiac. On this page, you will find the exact sign that the Moon is currently passing through. Use this page to learn how the movement of the Moon through the Zodiac affects your life and even world events.

Moon Phases and Lunar Magick

The lunar phase is important in determining the optimal time to perform certain actions, for the most satisfactory result. This time-honored information has been utilized for centuries by not only farmers and gardeners, but Metaphysicians and Magicians as well. Particular signs are more beneficial for certain purposes. Below, you will find a list of Moon Signs that can be used for planning the best time for your actions, and/or rituals.

Each of the 12 signs of the Zodiac, in addition to being “ruled” by a particular planet, are also under the influence of one of the 5 spiritual elements. Each element rules over 3 signs apiece. Fire and Air are considered “active” elements and take on so-called “masculine” traits. Earth and Water are considered “passive” elements and take on so-called “feminine” traits. [Note: Although Spirit is considered the 5th element, it does not rule over any particular Zodiac sign.] The elements, and what they affect are as follows:

Depending on the purpose of the Magician, certain Moon signs are better to use than others. For example, the signs of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are good for instigating action, but are not good for nurturing or growing things (such as plants.)

Air signs such as Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are good for communicating and dealing with the public. Earth signs such as Taurus are good for planting and manifesting, although Virgo (as the Virgin) is considered “barren” when it comes to planting.

Water signs (such as Cancer) are excellent for growing things, and dealing with people as well. The sign of Scorpio, however, is also considered “barren”, and not a good time for growing or manifesting things (unless they are of a “dark” nature.)

In addition to the Moon Signs, are the Phases of the Moon. There are basically four lunar phases, but only two states of fullness. The four phases of the Moon are the "New," and 1st Quarter, and Full (Waxing - growing) and 4th Quarter, (Waning - lessening.) When the Moon appears half-full in the sky, it is also called "Gibbous."

Obviously, the Moon doesn’t physically change, but only appears to. Still, tradition maintains that when the Moon appears to be “growing” (Waxing) it is the best time to perform Magick that will augment or increase the outcome desired by the Magician. When the Moon appears to be “lessening” (Waning) it is the time to perform Magick that will lessen, or decrease the outcome.

In general, the Waxing Moon is the ideal time for performing magick to acquire things, and the Waning Moon is the ideal time for banishing or releasing things. The New Moon is also known as the "Dark Moon" (also known as the “Black Moon.") This is the time of greatest power for banishing negativity and releasing yourself from all that binds you.

The Full Moon, however, is the best time to perform positive magick to acquire all that you desire. Most metaphysicians work in conjunction with the lunar phases as stated above, however, each Magician has his or her personal best times to perform magick.

Moon Signs & Their Meanings

The moon continuously moves through the twelve signs of the Zodiac, from Aries to Pisces, changing signs every 2-1/2 day, picking up various influences from each of the astrological signs. Good metaphysicians usually take this information into consideration when planning their rituals, as do earth workers (gardeners and farmers.)
