Welcome to the Full Moon & New Moon Dates Page

Every 14 days, the Moon reaches it's 2 major phases -- New, or Full. Fourteen days after the New Moon, it will become Full; Fourteen days after the Full Moon, it will reach it's New Phase again.

There is 1 New Moon and 1 Full Moon per month*; and each New Moon happens in the same Zodiac Sign in which the Sun is currently positioned. The Full Moon occurs when the Moon is in the exact opposite Zodiac sign in which the Sun is positioned.

Example: When the Sun is in the sign of Cancer, and the Moon is also in Cancer, there will be a New Moon. Conversely, when the Sun is in the sign of Cancer, and the Moon is in the sign of Capricorn (the exact opposite sign of Cancer,) then there will be a Full Moon. Visit the Astrology Pages Index to find out more about the art of Astrology. You can also sign up for classes on Astrology here.

On this page, you will find the exact dates, signs and degrees that the Moon will be New or Full. Use this page to plan your activities, (personal and/or magickal); or simply use it to note how the New and Full Moon affects you personally, as well as the world around you.

*[Note: Occasionally, there may be an additional New or Full Moon, however; this is a rare occurrence. The second Full Moon in a single month is termed, a "Blue Moon." (Just like the old Elvis Presley song.) The term is used to infer that something occurs rarely.]

For those of you interested in performing magickal rituals, you will certainly find this page (as well as the Daily Moon, Daily Moon 2004, and the Monthly Planetary Aspects pages) valuable in helping you choose the most auspicious Lunar Phase to perform your magick.

In addition to the Moon Signs, are the Phases of the Moon. There are basically four lunar phases, but only two states of fullness. The four phases of the Moon are the "New," and 1st Quarter, and Full (Waxing - growing) and 4th Quarter, (Waning - lessening.) When the Moon appears half-full in the sky, it is also called "Gibbous."

Obviously, the Moon doesn’t physically change, but only appears to. Still, tradition maintains that when the Moon appears to be “growing” (Waxing) it is the best time to perform Magick that will augment or increase the outcome desired by the Magician. When the Moon appears to be “lessening” (Waning) it is the time to perform Magick that will lessen, or decrease the outcome.

In general, the Waxing Moon is the ideal time for performing magick to acquire things, and the Waning Moon is the ideal time for banishing or releasing things. The New Moon is also known as the "Dark Moon" (also known as the “Black Moon.") This is the time of greatest power for banishing negativity and releasing yourself from all that binds you.

The Full Moon, however, is the best time to perform positive magick to acquire all that you desire. Most metaphysicians work in conjunction with the lunar phases as stated above, however, each Magician has his or her personal best times to perform magick.

Special Moon Phases: Eclipses

Eclipse Magick

Many magicians choose to do their most powerful spells during a special astronomical event known as an "eclipse." Just as the sign of the Moon affects the power of rituals and worldly events, there is an additional twist when the Lunar eclipse happens in a particular sign. [Note: This information will be added soon. Check back for info.]

Solar Eclipses

A total eclipse of the Sun is a special geocentric astronomical event that occurs when the Moon passes exactly in front of the Sun, preventing the sun’s light from reaching the earth. During the time of the eclipse’s totality, those people located within the path of the Moon's dark shadow can witness the wondrous shimmering solar corona as it fills the sky.

Causes of a Solar Eclipse

An eclipse of the Sun occurs when the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth, casting a shadow on the Earth's surface – this is a phenomena which is only possible during the lunar phase of the New Moon.

Although, a New Moon phase occurs once a month, there are a couple of reasons as to why we don’t witness a Solar Eclipse every month. The first reason is that the apparent sizes of the Sun and Moon are very similar as seen from the Earth. The result of this is that the Moon's shadow is only a few tens to hundreds of kilometers wide. This limits the region of the Earth that experiences an eclipse. Secondly, the Moon's orbit is slightly tilted with respect to the Earth's orbit. This means that the Sun, Moon and Earth rarely line up exactly during the phase of the New Moon, so an eclipse doesn't happen every month.

Causes of a Lunar Eclipses

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth's shadow falls on the moon. Lunar eclipses occur, on average, about every 6 months.

Types of Lunar Eclipses

Total Eclipse - When the entire moon enters the Earth's umbra (the darkest part of its shadow,) this is called a total eclipse.

Partial Eclipse - When only part of the moon enters the Earth's umbra, this is called a partial eclipse.

Duration of Lunar Eclipses

During an average total lunar eclipse, the moon is within the Earth's umbra for about an hour. This is called totality.

Frequency of Lunar Eclipses

Since the plane of the moon's orbit is inclined about 5°: from the plane of the Earth's orbit, lunar eclipses are relatively infrequent. There are about two lunar eclipses each year (visible somewhere on Earth.)

Moon Signs & Their Meanings

The moon continuously moves through the twelve signs of the Zodiac, from Aries to Pisces, changing signs every 2-1/2 day, picking up various influences from each of the astrological signs. Good metaphysicians usually take this information into consideration when planning their rituals, as do earth workers (gardeners and farmers.)
